we finally made our shelf! alex acutely pointed out that it seems every nesting post starts with "we finally did a thing!" this is probably true. but, this series has been about long games involving planning, timing, and, above all, patience, so an exclamation always feels appropriate.

two months ago, we took apart the box spring that had been against the wall in our bedroom since the fall. alex bought us a bed frame in november that doesn't require a box spring. i say all this in our instagram highlights video, but basically because it costs over $100 to throw away the box spring, we decided to take it apart to see if we could recycle and repurpose some of its parts. we kept most of the wood and the metal grid.
we had planned to make shelving out of the wood all along. there is a corner in our kitchen that is perfect for a shelf, and that way alex can display his chemex and coffee accouterments without keeping it all directly on the counter. i think i speak for both of us when i say that we are shocked at how good the shelf came out! i'm so proud of us for continually committing to an idea and following through, even if it doesn't get done right away. we repurposed existing materials and invested in tools to make more stuff in the future instead of just buying a shelf from the store, and i'm really proud of us for that.
lately we've been feeling that outdoor spring itch, but it's projects like this that continually help keep that restlessness at bay. especially this week, it's been pretty brutal. we're basically scratching at the windows, ready to ride our bikes to the lake as soon as temperatures rise above 50. today i even went as far as to look at flights to warmer places online, because i just need some sunshine real bad. so while we had a super awesome day today, i am also not completely happy and feeling pretty restless. but, it's moments and exercises like this that cause me to stop and find gratitude. the warmer weather will arrive in due time. for now, it's about prepping our house the best we can to make sure that it is ready for all the living we are going to do outside of it soon enough.
additional alex note: i think it's important to mention that we'd never done anything like this before. though we aspire to build things, there's never been a helluva a lot of follow through. this was the first time we've really done anything this adventurous. so seeing it come out as intended was a big win for both of us.
