alex and i have recently gotten into cooking alternative burgers. we started with portabella mushroom burgers but i soon thought of black bean burgers as another great option. so here it is, a deliciously-spiced, filling patty with a spot-on texture. i discovered this recipe on allrecipes.com.

what you’ll need:

  • 1 15.5 oz can black beans

  • 1/2 green onion, either finely chopped or processed in a food processor

  • 1/2 onion, either finely chopped or processed in a food processor

  • 1 egg

  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (we use sriracha)

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder

  • 1 tablespoon cumin

  • 1/2 cup plain bread crumbs

  • salt and pepper to taste

  • any burger fixins - we opt for mayo, sliced provolone, arugula, and possibly some crispy onions

  • bun option - would be good on any bun, but I recently tried it with an iceberg lettuce wrap and that was very delicious as well

what you’ll do:

preheat oven to 375

drain and rinse beans

  • chop and/or process your onion and pepper (we don’t own a food processor and finely chopped works just fine)

  • mash those beans with a fork (alex discovered the bottom of a cup also works)

  • mix together egg, hot sauce, cumin, and chili powder

  • mix onion and pepper into beans

  • mix egg mixture into beans

  • mix bread crumbs into beans

  • line a baking sheet with foil and spray it

  • roll mixture into balls and put on sheet

  • gently smush balls into patties

  • depending on how thick you like your patties, this will yield 4-6 patties

  • cook patties for 10 minutes on each side

  • build your burger and eat it!
